This trial studies how well and how efficiently VNS therapy works for people with long-lasting or repeated major depression that hasn’t responded to enough antidepressant treatments. It may help patients who are already receiving depression treatment but are still struggling.

Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old
  • You have major depression for over 2 years or you’ve had at least 2 past episodes
  • Your depression has not improved enough after trying enough standard treatments (checked by your local doctor, and confirmed with an interview called MINI)
  • You are currently on at least one depression treatment (medicine, maintenance ECT, or therapy) or a mood-stabilizing treatment if you have bipolar disorder
  • You can come to clinic visits and complete study questionnaires/check-ins reliably
  • You do not have severe substance/alcohol abuse or a current psychotic disorder (like schizophrenia or related disorders), and you don’t have severe personality disorder that would make study participation hard
