Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have a BMI of 33 or higher (morbid obesity)
  • You are currently on a breathing machine (ventilator) in the hospital for any reason
  • Your doctors expect you to need the ventilator for at least 6 hours
  • Your heart is stable with adequate blood pressure (no severe shock)
  • You do not have a collapsed lung, severe brain injury, or recent heart/chest surgery
