Who can take part
- You are between 18 and 84 years old.
- You have a diagnosis of COPD (chronic lung disease).
- You were recently hospitalized for a COPD flare-up that required breathing support (like a mask or ventilator).
- You now can breathe on your own without that support.
- A sleep study shows you have moderate to severe sleep apnea (at least 15 breathing pauses per hour of sleep).
- You are not already using a home breathing device (NIV) for sleep apnea.
- You are willing to use either CPAP or NIV at home if needed.
- You have smoked less than 10 pack-years (for example, 1 pack a day for 10 years).
- You do not have a serious mental condition or dementia that would make it hard to follow the study.
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are not in another research study that would interfere with this one.
