Who can take part

  • You have esophageal cancer in the middle or lower part, or lung cancer in certain stages
  • Your treatment plan includes external-beam radiation to the chest with the goal to cure
  • You are age 18 or older and can sign written consent
  • Your general health score is very good to moderate (WHO 0–2)
  • In the last 2 months, you have not had heart failure or a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung)
  • You do not have certain lung/health factors (for example, very advanced COPD, BMI over 35, or prior chest radiation), and you can have MRI if needed
