- You have a COPD flare-up that is serious enough to need a breathing machine (a ventilator).
- You started being intubated (a breathing tube) less than 24 hours ago.
- You are not expected to be taken off the breathing machine within the next 24 hours.
- Breathing test/measurement shows your lungs have an expiratory time constant (RCexp) higher than 2.0 seconds.
- You do not have restrictive lung problems (lung conditions that make it hard to expand).
- You do not have major blood-flow or heart stability problems, or serious stomach/esophagus problems.
