Who can take part
- You have confirmed rectal adenocarcinoma (a type of rectal cancer found on biopsy/pathology)
- A tumor board (MDT) has said you may be able to have rectal surgery after treatment
- Your rectal tumor is in the cT1 to cT3 range and you have MRI results that match the trial size/location limits (tumor up to 4.5 cm and its lowest edge at or below the peritoneal reflection)
- You are an adult (18 or older) with overall health that is good enough for treatment (performance status 0–2)
- You must be able to take both radiotherapy and capecitabine, with blood tests and organ function within required ranges
- You cannot have had prior pelvic radiation, distant spread (metastases), or have a current colostomy/ileostomy
