Who can take part
- You’re 18 or older
- You smoke or used to smoke at least 10 “pack-years”
- You have a known COPD history and are having an acute flare-up
- Doctors need to start NIV because your blood gas shows acidemia (pH below 7.35)
- You can use NIV (no major safety reasons you can’t tolerate a mask or need immediate intubation)
