Who can take part
- You must be an adult (18 or older) and able to consent.
- You are scheduled for thoracic aortic surgery and will have an external lumbar drain placed as part of routine care.
- You have not had meningitis, encephalitis, or a brain abscess in the last 6 months.
- You have not had brain injury (like stroke, serious head trauma, or brain bleeding) in the last 3 months, and you don’t have certain brain conditions such as known brain tumors, or significant memory/thinking problems.
- You have not had brain or spinal surgery in the last 3 months, and you don’t have an infection within 2 weeks before surgery.
