Who can take part

  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Have one-sided (unilateral) diaphragm paralysis from an isolated phrenic nerve injury.
  • Your diagnosis should be at least 1 year old before starting treatment.
  • Be able to give written consent (sign a study consent form).
  • Have normal daytime carbon dioxide levels (not too high).
  • Not have diaphragm paralysis affecting both sides.
  • Not have another whole-body nerve/muscle disease causing diaphragm weakness (like ALS).
  • No prior radiation to the chest and you must be eligible for diaphragm surgery.
