Who can take part
- You have rectal cancer that is adenocarcinoma, confirmed by pathology (lab testing of tissue)
- MRI shows your tumor is T3 or T4, or has lymph node involvement
- Your age is 18 to 75, and you’re well enough for treatment (ECOG 0–1)
- The tumor is close enough to the anus (within 15 cm) that surgeons may be able to remove it while preserving the anus
- You have not had any prior systemic chemo, radiation, or local procedure for rectal cancer
- Recent blood tests within 7 days are strong enough for chemotherapy and surgery (specific minimum counts and liver/kidney values)
