This trial studies interventions to improve math and cognitive (thinking) skills in elementary school children. It includes both children with math learning difficulties and typically developing children, using tests and MRI brain scans for those who can participate.

Who can take part

  • Child is in first grade through about age 12 (6–12 years old)
  • Child’s IQ test score is above 70
  • Math learning status is based on testing: either below the 35th percentile on a number/“numeracy” test plus math subtests, or at/above the 35th percentile on the numeracy test plus all math subtests
  • Child has normal (or corrected) vision and no hearing problems
  • Child can have an MRI scan and is right-handed; also no metal/pacemaker/implants or other MRI safety issues
  • Child does not have certain brain/mental health histories (like schizophrenia/psychosis/depression/ADHD), head injury trauma, regular psychiatric medicines, or strong claustrophobia
