Apomorphine for severe unresponsive brain injuries

This trial tests whether apomorphine can improve care or outcomes for people in an unresponsive wakefulness or minimally conscious state after a brain injury. It is designed for patients who are medically stable and not currently on certain brain- or heart- affecting medicines.

Who can take part

  • Ages 18 to 80, and the person is more than 4 weeks after the brain injury
  • The person is not breathing through a ventilator (breathing without a breathing machine)
  • They have been diagnosed as unresponsive or minimally conscious, based on repeat brain-behavior testing (CRS-R) in the past 14 days
  • In the last 2 weeks, they have not taken dopamine-type medicines other than apomorphine, and no new neurological medicines besides seizure or spasticity medicines
  • No major heart rhythm risk: recent ECG must not show a corrected QT over 480 ms, and they should not have serious heart/liver problems or major electrolyte problems
  • They must be able to safely have brain testing like MRI, EEG, or PET (no contraindications) and have a legal representative able to consent
