  • You are an adult (18 years or older).
  • Doctors strongly suspect you may need VV-ECMO (a breathing heart-lung machine through veins).
  • You have a line in an artery so blood samples can be taken.
  • Doctors can measure brain blood flow using a bedside ultrasound test called transcranial Doppler.
  • You are able to have brain monitoring measurements taken without major technical or logistical problems (for example, the ultrasound window is usable).
