Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older and have an infection on the left side of the heart (heart valve) confirmed by accepted medical criteria
- Your specific bacteria are among the ones the study can treat with either approach (includes several common types like some streptococci, Enterococcus, Staphylococcus, and HACEK)
- You’ve already had at least 10 days of antibiotics through a vein, and at least 1 week through a vein after any heart surgery (“valve surgery”)
- Your recent symptoms and blood tests show improvement during treatment (for example, fever under 38°C for more than 2 days, and falling inflammation markers/white blood cell count)
- An ultrasound of your heart (transthoracic or transesophageal echocardiogram) was done within 48 hours of starting the study
