Testing robotic surgery for HPV-related throat cancer patients

HPV-positive Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

This Phase 2 trial studies a robotic surgery approach for certain HPV-related throat cancers, using HPV blood tests before and after surgery to guide care. If your cancer is HPV-related and your HPV blood test results match the trial targets, you may be able to join and help improve treatment for future patients.

Who can take part

  • You’re 18 or older, and you have a type of throat cancer linked to HPV that is p16-positive on lab testing
  • Your scanable primary tumor can be fully removed by surgery (no distant spread)
  • Before surgery, your HPV blood test (NavDX) must be detectable at the required level (at least 10 fragments/mL)
  • After surgery, your repeat HPV blood test (1–5 weeks later) must be undetectable (less than 5 fragments/mL)
  • You haven’t had prior cancer treatment to the head and neck (except limited biopsy/tonsil removal), and you’re not an active smoker
  • Your health tests (kidney function, blood counts) must be adequate, and you must be able to sign consent
