This trial is testing a surgical approach for people with HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer that is stage I or II (but not the very smallest). The goal is to see if removing the tumor through the mouth and taking out neck lymph nodes is effective and safe. It may be an option if you are healthy enough for surgery.

Who can take part

  • You have HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer (or cancer in a neck node with unknown origin) that is stage I or II, but not the very earliest T1N0 or T2N0 stages.
  • You are planning to have the tumor removed through the mouth (transoral surgery) and also have neck lymph nodes taken out.
  • You are in good enough health to have surgery (ECOG performance status 0-2).
  • Your kidney function, white blood cell count, and platelet count are within acceptable ranges.
  • You are 18 or older, and if you could become pregnant or father a child, you agree to use birth control during the study.
