Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 75 years old.
  • You are scheduled for lumbar spine fusion surgery (a surgery to join bones in your lower back).
  • Your health status is ASA class I, II, or III (generally healthy to mild or moderate health problems).
  • You have not been taking strong pain medicines (opioids) daily for more than 3 months.
  • You do not have a history of chronic pain treated by a pain specialist.
  • You have not had prior lumbar spine surgery with metal implants at the same spot.
  • You do not have kidney problems (creatinine clearance under 60).
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder or active infection at the surgery site.
  • You weigh at least 50 kg (about 110 pounds) and are not allergic to local anesthetics or the pain medicines used.
  • You do not have any reason that would make a nerve block unsafe for you.
