Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
  • Your care team can place and use a transpulmonary thermodilution monitoring device
  • You can have an esophageal (food-pipe) pressure monitoring tube placed
  • You are not pregnant
  • Your medical history does not include esophageal varicose veins
  • Your blood clotting is not severely unsafe for an esophageal catheter (severe bleeding risk)
