- You have been diagnosed with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
- Your care team can place and use a transpulmonary thermodilution monitoring device
- You can have an esophageal (food-pipe) pressure monitoring tube placed
- You are not pregnant
- Your medical history does not include esophageal varicose veins
- Your blood clotting is not severely unsafe for an esophageal catheter (severe bleeding risk)
