  • You are admitted to a study ICU (intensive care unit)
  • You are on an invasive breathing machine right now (a tube in the airway)
  • You meet the study’s ARDS definition for moderate or severe severity
  • You are age 18 or older
  • You have not had a breathing machine for more than 7 days in the past 30 days
