Who can take part

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Expect to need a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation) for more than 24 hours
  • Expect to be in the ICU for more than 72 hours
  • Be able to use Chinese for study activities
  • Have no severe vision or hearing problems that would block using the VR equipment
  • Not have had serious confusion before coming to the ICU

This study tests if using virtual reality can help you feel more comfortable while recovering in the intensive care unit (ICU) after major surgery. If you are having heart or major abdominal surgery and will stay in the ICU for at least 2 days, you may be able to try a VR program to see if it eases your stay.

If you're 65 or older, have this brain condition, and are having non-cardiac surgery, you may be eligible.
