Who can take part

  • You are age 55 or older
  • Your stroke was called “cryptogenic” (no clear cause) after brain imaging, blood-vessel checks, a 24-hour heart monitor, and an echocardiogram
  • Your stroke affected the brain’s outer layer (an “acute cortical infarction”) and there is an artery blockage inside the brain (intracranial occlusion)
  • Your disability score is less than 4 on the Modified Rankin Scale (you can likely manage daily activities with limited assistance)
  • You must not have had a “lacunar” stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA) instead of this type of stroke
  • You must not already have a known stroke source like atrial fibrillation, other major heart causes, or certain vessel narrowing causes, and you should not have a pacemaker
