This trial tests whether using linezolid or vancomycin before surgery can better prevent infections at the surgical wound in people at higher risk. You might be considered because you either can’t take certain standard antibiotics (beta-lactams) and/or may carry MRSA bacteria.

Who can take part

  • You are age 18 or older and planning an elective surgery (not emergency).
  • Your surgeon plans to use vancomycin as an alternative to beta-lactam antibiotics for your surgery type (for example neurosurgery, cardiac, orthopedic, vascular, or some other listed operations).
  • You have a beta-lactam antibiotic allergy and/or you may carry MRSA (a resistant bacteria) based on recent treatment or a positive test within the last 3 months.
  • You must be able to sign consent and have medical coverage similar to social security.
  • You must not already be enrolled in this study (LOVip) from a previous surgery and the current surgery can’t be because of a suspected or proven infection already present.
