Cardiac MRI-guided iron-chelator treatment after a heart attack

Acute Myocardial Infarction Type 1

Who can take part

  • You are age 18 to 79
  • You recently had an anterior wall STEMI heart attack and got emergency angiogram with primary PCI (a procedure to open a blocked artery)
  • You have not had a heart attack, stent/angioplasty (PCI), or bypass (CABG) in the past year
  • Your heart’s pumping strength (LVEF) is 40% or higher
  • You can safely get a cardiac MRI with contrast: no gadolinium/contrast allergy and no metal/other MRI safety issues
  • Your kidneys and liver tests are safe (eGFR 30 or higher; ALT and AST not more than 2× the upper normal limit); also your blood counts are adequate (ANC 1.5 or higher)

Iron for heart attack recovery in older adults

This study tests whether giving iron through a vein can improve quality of life in older adults who recently had a heart attack or unstable angina and also have low iron levels. If you qualify, you would receive either iron or a placebo (inactive substance) to see if iron helps you feel better and recover faster.
