Who can take part

  • Your oxygen levels are low: your PaO2/FiO2 is 300 or less
  • You have a breathing tube in your mouth (endotracheal tube size 7.5 or 8.0)
  • You are on an invasive breathing machine (mechanical ventilation)
  • Your chest scan (X-ray or CT) shows airspace changes on both sides of the lungs
  • A doctor says it is safe to place a catheter through your esophagus
  • You are not expected to be taken off the breathing machine within 24 hours
