Who can take part

  • You are an adult (over 18 years old)
  • You are in the ICU after multiple trauma (injury severity score over 18)
  • You were placed on a breathing machine (intubated and mechanically ventilated) at ICU admission or within 24 hours
  • You are expected to need mechanical ventilation for at least 48 hours
  • You are not pregnant, and you have no feeding restrictions that would prevent tube feeding after 48 hours
  • You have not recently had major stomach or gut surgery, and you are not on long-term steroid medicines
