Who can take part

  • You were recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, or high blood pressure, or you already have one of these and you were previously diagnosed
  • You meet specific lab or measurement cutoffs for diabetes, obesity, or high blood pressure, OR you meet the study definition of metabolic syndrome
  • If you have metabolic syndrome, you must have central obesity (often waist size) plus at least two other risk factors (like triglycerides, HDL, blood pressure, or fasting sugar)
  • You do not have hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, or another known liver disease, and you don’t have another condition that could cause liver scarring
  • You do not drink more than about 2–3 alcoholic drinks per day (depending on sex), and you can understand the study and sign consent
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and you have not had bariatric (weight loss) surgery in the last 12 months
