Timing strategies to protect legs during peripheral ECMO

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Complication

Who can take part

  • Be 19 years old or older
  • Be in refractory cardiogenic shock and receiving peripheral VA-ECMO
  • Be able (or your substitute decision-maker can) to give informed consent
  • Not be currently pregnant, or within 30 days after delivery, or breast-feeding
  • Not be using VA-ECMO for a non–heart shock reason
  • Have no severe bleeding/clotting problem (severe coagulopathy)
  • Not have already irreversible leg blood flow loss that needs procedures or surgery right now
