Who can take part

  • You (or your child) have been diagnosed with insulin-dependent type 1 diabetes.
  • Your blood test shows at least one diabetes-related immune antibody (such as GADA, IA-2, IAA, ZnT8, or ICA).
  • You started insulin within the last 3 months (no more than 3 months since the first insulin shot).
  • Your age is at least 7 and less than 18 years.
  • You have not been diagnosed with celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or other intestinal inflammation conditions.

Study of immune-modulating drugs for new-onset type 1 diabetes

This study tests two different medications (Anti-Thymocyte Globulin and Adalimumab or Verapamil) to see if they can slow down the loss of insulin production in people with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive one of the treatments and will be followed for about a year to see how well their bodies still make insulin.
