Pupil changes during vagus nerve stimulation during ear surgery

This study looks at how your pupils (the black center of the eye) respond while a vagus nerve device is turned on during surgery for either a cochlear implant or a vagus nerve stimulator. It aims to better understand the eye/nerve effects of this stimulation, which may improve how such procedures are done safely.

Who can take part

  • You are age 18 or older and can agree to join the study
  • You are scheduled for cochlear implant surgery or an implantable vagus nerve stimulator surgery
  • You do not have a past ear surgery that would count as prior ear surgery for the study (and no prior cochlear implant)
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You do not have certain health issues that affect the vagus nerve or safety of stimulation, like heart rhythm problems or lung disease
