External drainage for severe TBI brain swelling

This study tests whether placing an external drainage tube in the lower back can reduce dangerous pressure in the brain after a severe traumatic brain injury. If you meet safety and brain-scan criteria, it may help the research team understand whether this approach is safe early after injury.

Who can take part

  • You’re between 18 and 65 years old.
  • Your injury is severe, with Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of 3 to 8.
  • Your pupils are the same on both sides and both respond to light.
  • Your brain CT shows limited midline shift (5 mm or less) and open (not fully blocked) fluid spaces around the brain.
  • You can start the procedure within 24 hours after injury, and you have a qualifying ELD safety score (5 or higher).
  • There is no reason you can’t receive the tube, such as bleeding/clotting problems, very low platelets, blood thinners, pregnancy, or certain spinal shape issues.
