Rifampicin add-on for knee, hip, or shoulder implant infections

This Phase 3 trial tests whether adding rifampicin improves outcomes for implant infections caused by a specific germ (Cutibacterium acnes) after surgery. If you have such an infection and the germ is susceptible, you may be able to receive a rifampicin-based treatment plan.

Who can take part

  • You’re age 18 or older.
  • Your implant infection involves only one germ: Cutibacterium acnes, and it’s “rifampicin-susceptible.”
  • Two separate samples taken during your implant surgery both grew Cutibacterium acnes.
  • You had surgery to treat the infection (one-stage or two-stage revision) for a knee, hip, or shoulder implant.
  • Your bacteria test shows you can be treated with either amoxicillin or moxifloxacin, based on susceptibility and your history.
  • If you could become pregnant, you must use very effective birth control during treatment and until the drug has fully cleared.
