Who can take part

  • You are age 70 or older
  • You can see and hear well enough (with glasses or hearing aids) to complete thinking and memory tests
  • You speak and understand English comfortably
  • You are scheduled for a non-emergency surgery that is not on your heart or brain, and the surgery will take at least 2 hours under general anesthesia
  • You have not been diagnosed with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, severe mental illness, or serious brain injury
  • You do not have a history of alcohol or drug abuse, and you are not allergic to the anesthetics propofol or sevoflurane
