Who can take part

  • You have idiopathic scoliosis (curved spine with no known cause)
  • You are scheduled for a posterior spinal fusion (back surgery) that joins at least 5 vertebrae in both the upper and lower back
  • You are not allergic to dexmedetomidine or standard surgery medicines
  • You are not currently taking opioid pain medicine, TCA antidepressants, or gabapentinoids (nerve pain drugs)
  • You do not have unstable heart problems, a long QT interval on EKG, life-threatening arrhythmias, or take digoxin
  • You do not have Moya Moya disease (a rare blood vessel disorder in the brain)
