Ultrasound to identify the cause of lung fluid buildup

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have fluid around your lungs confirmed by chest X-ray or ultrasound
  • Your doctor has already scheduled you for a thoracentesis (a procedure to remove and test the fluid)
  • You can give written consent to participate
  • You have not had prior chest procedures like pleurodesis or chest tube insertion on the same side
  • You do not have severe bleeding disorders, chest wall deformities, or severe obesity that would prevent clear ultrasound images
