Who can take part

  • You must be 35 years or older.
  • You must have a confirmed diagnosis of severe COPD based on lung function tests (FEV1 less than 50% of normal).
  • You must have smoked at least 10 pack-years (for example, one pack a day for 10 years).
  • You must be in a stable period of COPD, with no flare-ups in the last 4 weeks.
  • You cannot have another serious lung disease like pulmonary fibrosis or severe bronchiectasis as the main cause of breathing problems.
  • You cannot have had cancer that has not been in remission for at least 5 years, or have alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency as the cause of COPD.
