Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are currently using a non-invasive breathing mask (NIV) for acute breathing problems
  • You are in the ICU, a step-down unit, or the emergency department with plans for close monitoring
  • You feel very agitated, restless, or uncomfortable with the mask, or you have asked to have it removed
  • You do not have a pacemaker that causes very slow heart rate or heart block
  • You are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or allergic to dexmedetomidine
