Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for a planned (non-emergency) heart surgery that uses a heart-lung bypass machine.
  • You are able to understand and sign a consent form.
  • You are not having a heart or lung transplant, or a ventricular assist device (mechanical heart pump) implanted.
  • You do not have sepsis, delirium, or unstable vital signs (like very fast heart rate with low blood pressure).
  • You are not on medications to support your blood pressure or on a mechanical circulatory support device.
