This study looks at how changing your physical activity level (either becoming more or less active) affects your whole body over 6 months. It is for people aged 50–65 who are overweight and either quite sedentary or fairly active, and who are willing to change their routine.

Who can take part

  • You are between 50 and 65 years old
  • You are overweight (BMI 25–35) and have a waist size of at least 94 cm (men) or 80 cm (women)
  • You sit either less than 6 hours a day (and walk more than 8,000 steps) OR you sit 8+ hours a day (and walk 5,000 steps or less)
  • You are willing to change your activity level for 6 months
  • You do not have any major heart, lung, metabolic, muscle, or kidney disease, and you are not on regular medications that could interfere with the study
  • If you are a woman, you are past menopause or on stable hormone replacement therapy
