Autoantibody study in new focal seizures

This research study looks for specific immune system markers (autoantibodies) in the blood and spinal fluid of people who have recently started having focal seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain) with no known cause. Finding these markers could help doctors understand why the seizures started.

Who can take part

  • You have had your first focal seizure (seizure starting in one area of the brain) within the last year.
  • Your doctors have not found another cause for your seizures, such as a brain injury, infection, or genetic condition.
  • You are being seen by a seizure specialist (epileptologist) at a epilepsy center or clinic.
  • You are willing to provide a blood sample.
  • If the blood test shows certain immune markers, you agree to also have a spinal tap (lumbar puncture) to test your spinal fluid.
