Radiation for Graves' Eye Disease: 1 vs 2 Weeks

Thyroid Associated Ophthalmopathy

Who can take part

  • You have active, moderate to severe thyroid eye disease that affects your eyes.
  • You have tried 3 doses of steroid medicine by IV, but your symptoms have not improved enough or you still have double vision.
  • Your thyroid levels are stable and controlled (euthyroid).
  • You are age 35 or older and not pregnant.
  • You do not have severe high blood pressure or diabetic retinopathy.

This study tests whether the cholesterol-lowering drug atorvastatin can help people with active, moderate-to-severe thyroid eye disease (swelling and bulging of the eyes caused by an overactive thyroid). You will receive the drug or a placebo alongside your usual steroid treatment, and your eyes will be checked over about a year.
