Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are a patient in the ICU and expected to stay for more than 3 days.
  • You need a breathing machine (ventilator) or will likely need one soon, for at least 72 hours.
  • You do not have a serious lung infection at the start of the study (CPIS score below 6).
  • You have no history of food or liquid going into your lungs (aspiration) at the start.
