Who can take part

  • You have severe paralysis in both arms and legs (very little or no hand, wrist, or arm movement) due to a spinal cord injury or ALS, and this has not improved for at least one year.
  • You are expected to live at least one more year.
  • You speak English and have a stable caregiver who can help you.
  • You do not have active implanted medical devices, poorly controlled seizures, diabetes, or other serious health conditions that would make surgery unsafe.
  • You are not using tobacco products and are not morbidly obese (BMI over 40).
  • You are willing and able to undergo brain surgery and have a brain MRI that shows no major problems.
