- You are diagnosed with unipolar depression (major depressive disorder) by a doctor.
- You are not currently taking medications that affect the brain (except antidepressants or lithium).

- You do not have a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, or narcolepsy.
- You are right-handed.
- You are not pregnant, and you have no unstable medical conditions or neurological disorders like epilepsy.
