This trial tests whether the drug tocilizumab (which blocks a protein called interleukin-6) can help prevent further strokes in people who have had a stroke or mini-stroke due to a narrowed artery inside the skull. If you are eligible, you would receive either tocilizumab or a placebo to see if it reduces your risk of another stroke.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and had a recent stroke or transient ischemic attack (a mini-stroke) within the last 72 hours.
  • The stroke or mini-stroke was caused by significant blockage (50-99% narrowing) in one of the arteries inside your skull.
  • You have not received clot-busting medication or clot removal in the last 24 hours.
  • You do not have serious heart conditions like atrial fibrillation, recent heart attack, or artificial heart valves.
  • You do not have active infections, including tuberculosis, HIV, or hepatitis B, and no uncontrolled high blood pressure.
