High-Intensity Interval Training for Chronic Stroke

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 69 years old.
  • Your stroke happened at least 6 months ago.
  • You can walk 30 feet (10 meters) with or without a cane or walker.
  • Your memory and thinking are generally good (a score of 24 or more on a dementia screen).
  • You do not have a pacemaker, defibrillator, unstable heart/lung condition, or severe leg spasticity.

High-Intensity Exercise for Stroke Recovery

This study tests whether a short, high-intensity interval exercise program is safe and practical for people who are recovering from a stroke during inpatient rehabilitation. You will be asked to do short bursts of exercise on a recumbent stepper, with rest periods, while your heart rate and blood pressure are monitored.
