High-Intensity Exercise for Stroke Recovery

This study tests whether a short, high-intensity interval exercise program is safe and practical for people who are recovering from a stroke during inpatient rehabilitation. You will be asked to do short bursts of exercise on a recumbent stepper, with rest periods, while your heart rate and blood pressure are monitored.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 to 85 years old.
  • You had a stroke caused by a clot or bleeding within the brain.
  • You can pedal a recumbent (back-supported) exercise stepper for at least 3 minutes at a light level of effort.
  • You can follow two-step instructions and communicate with the study team.
  • You do not have a pacemaker, recent heart attack, unstable chest pain, or other serious heart or lung conditions that would make exercise unsafe.
  • You are not pregnant and do not have another neurological disease like Parkinson's or multiple sclerosis.
