Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for a planned (not emergency) coronary artery bypass surgery that uses a heart-lung machine.
  • Your surgery will be done through a cut down the middle of your chest (sternotomy) with tubes placed directly into your heart.
  • You have not had heart surgery before.
  • You are not pregnant.
  • You are not allergic to any of the medicines used in the study (other than the antibiotic cefazolin).
