Elastic power predicts ARDS severity and death risk

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 65 years old
  • You have severe pneumonia that led to ARDS
  • You are in the intensive care unit (ICU)
  • You have been on a breathing machine (intubated) for more than 48 hours
  • You meet the standard definition for ARDS (rapid onset, low oxygen levels, and both lungs showing cloudiness on chest X-ray)

This study compares different ways of setting the positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP – the pressure that helps keep your lungs open on the ventilator) to find the best approach for people with moderate-to-severe ARDS. It uses existing sensors – an esophageal pressure probe and a chest impedance belt – to guide the settings, which may improve breathing support and recovery.
