Who can take part

  • You must be 65 years or older and recently admitted to the hospital for general medical care.
  • You cannot already be taking melatonin or a similar drug (ramelteon).
  • You must not have delirium (sudden confusion) at the start of the trial.
  • You must be able to take medicine by mouth or through a feeding tube in your nose.
  • You must not have certain autoimmune diseases (like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, or lupus).
  • You must not have a history of heavy alcohol use or be in alcohol withdrawal.
