This study looks at whether using certain sleep/behavior medicines (called neuroleptics) with anti-seizure medicines can calm agitation from delirium without needing as much of the usual “neuroleptic” medicines. It may help people with advanced cancer who are confused and very restless or hard to settle.

Who can take part

  • You have advanced cancer that cannot be cured (spread, local advancement, or ongoing return).
  • A palliative care team has already evaluated you in the hospital.
  • You currently have delirium, meaning sudden confusion that meets DSM-5 criteria.
  • Your delirium is “agitated” (very restless/upset) or mixed, needing treatment like a rescue medicine or non-medication calming steps (for example, a sitter).
  • You are 18 or older, and your clinician agrees it’s okay to enroll you.
  • You have an adult family caregiver involved (spouse, adult child, sibling, parent, or close partner).
